The University of Osijek - UNIOS was founded on 31 May 1975, following the decision of the Croatian Parliament on 26 March 1975 to grant consent for the establishment of the university. In the early 1970s, the development of higher education in Osijek indicated the need for better coordination of the activities of higher education institutions in order to create more favourable conditions for scientific and teaching activities by establishing a state university. The modern history of the university is a continuation of more than three centuries of tradition of higher education in the city of Osijek, as in 1707 the Studium Philosophicum Essekini was founded, and in 1724 the Studium Theologicum Essekini, which in 1735 was transformed into a general higher education institution of the first class - Studium Generalae Theologicum Prime Classis, i.e. an educational institution of the highest faculty level with a preparatory department of philosophy. Currently, the University of Osijek consists of 14 faculties, one Academy of Arts and Culture and three university departments. It has approximately 16,000 students in over 200 study programmes in all scientific fields at three levels of education (bachelor's, master's and doctoral). In addition to students, the academic community of UNIOS also unites over 2,500 scientific and administrative staff. Since 1990, it has been named after Josip Juraj Strossmayer, an outstanding citizen of Osijek, bishop, educator, exceptional philanthropist, humanist, founder of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, politician, visionary and certainly one of the most influential people in our region who lived at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Unfortunately, in more than four decades of its modern history, the University of Osijek was significantly damaged during the Homeland War: 24 students and 5 university lecturers were killed, and the faculties and university institutions suffered great material damage. Since 1995, in addition to the restoration and reconstruction, the University has carried out a number of significant changes, especially in terms of organization, creation of new study programs, significant capital investments and increase in the number of students, teachers, staff and administrative personnel. The University implements functional integration, which is based on unified and coordinated actions of all scientific and creative components and infrastructural institutions. Considering the fact that Croatian higher education is based on European humanistic and democratic values, the efforts of the University of Osijek are aimed at involving in modern European systems of higher education and science, while maintaining its own uniqueness and identity. As a modern European university, it emphasizes the need to harmonize the processes of the Bologna reform aimed at the teaching system, student and teacher mobility, liberalization and continuous development of higher education in the Republic of Croatia, as well as increasing the availability of international research programs and projects and the development of new technologies within the European Research Area. To date, the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University in Osijek has awarded 17 honorary doctorates and 18 emeritus professorships.
